TBR Football exclusively understands that Arsenal remain confident of signing young Rosenborg star Sverre Nypan this week.
Nypan has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time now, a midfielder who has already made 60 senior appearances in Norway’s top flight despite being 18-years-old.
Nypan has been flourishing for Rosenborg and has earned comparisons to Martin Odegaard given that he’s also Norwegian.
The youngster is currently uncapped for Norway but that’s likely to change should he get his move to the Premier League this month, which is now looking increasingly likely.
Arsenal believe that Sverre Nypan deal will be wrapped up this week
Graeme Bailey – TBR football chief correspondent, understands that Arsenal remain confident of signing Nypan despite interest from Manchester City.
Nypan has a choice between the two Premier League heavyweights, but Arsenal believe he will opt for a move to north London.
The Gunners expect Nypan to make a decision this week, even though he’s currently back training with Rosenborg as planned after a trip to England.
On their part, City are pushing to complete a deal, one that could see the youngster loaned to or even start with Girona, or even Palermo, who are both part of the City Football Group.
But as things stand, it seems as if Nypan will be heading for Arsenal, perhaps becoming Mikel Arteta’s first signing in the January window.
Man City still not giving up in pursuit of Sverre Nypan
TBR previously shared that Nypan held talks with Arsenal, a player who has attracted interest from several top Premier League sides.
However, it looks like Arteta will get his man as things stand, a youngster who can operate in several midfield positions as well as playing as a false nine on occasion.
Interestingly, Nypan currently wears the number 41 shirt for Rosenborg, a number occupied by Declan Rice in north London.
It seems unlikely that Rice would suddenly change his digits should Nypan be successful in joining the club, suggesting the latter will need to compromise.
Of course, Arteta may hope that Nypan one day lines up alongside Rice in his midfield, a young talent who can progress alongside the likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
And fortunately, Lewis-Skelly is close to a new long-term contract at Arsenal, as TBR exclusively revealed.
