Arsenal and Liverpool look like they will be the two teams contending to win the Premier League this season.
Gary Neville thinks Arsenal can win the league, but Liverpool are certainly favourites for the title at the moment.
Both teams were, once again, victorious at the weekend, and Liverpool continue to look as strong as ever.
Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been reviewing the title race and the strengths of both sides.
The pundit, as ever, was excited about Arsenal’s chances, but he did concede that Liverpool have an advantage over Arsenal in that their bench is much better than the Gunners’.
Liverpool’s bench is much better than Arsenal’s
Wright spoke about both teams’ backup options, touching on the idea that Darwin Nunez is a huge impact player.
Nunez has been criticised at times this season, but Wright believes he is a key weapon for Liverpool.
The pundit noted that Liverpool’s bench is the opposite of Arsenal’s claiming that they have so much more experience and quality in their ranks.
“Those are the perfect moment for someone like Darwin Nunez’s energy. Because you could feel like, especially away from home, fans really love him.
“When he comes on, he gives them a boost. And I think that he’s somebody that as much as when he plays, he stretches teams, he’s constantly harrying defenders. He doesn’t give anybody a minute’s break, but he misses chances.
“Coming on for like 10, 15 minutes and condensing all of his energy into that 15 minutes, he’s dangerous. Liverpool’s bench is so good. When you look at what they’ve got to come off the bench, and that is the total opposite to what we have.
“I remember hearing Mikel say it not long ago. What Liverpool have on the bench is the total opposite to what we’ve got. Sometimes we’ve got a bench that’s not even a Premier League goal on it.
“So that’s the problem we have. But again, the summer and transfers, we’ll see how it goes for us. I’m excited about the way the season might end, off of the back of that.”
Liverpool’s bench compared to Arsenal’s
Wright makes an interesting point here, but the numbers show that he’s not quite right.
Indeed, Wright says that Arsenal barely have any Premier League goals on their bench, but, at the weekend, the Gunners actually had more Premier League goals on their bench than Liverpool did.
Arsenal’s bench vs Manchester City | Premier League goals |
Neto | 0 |
Riccardo Calafiori | 2 |
Oleksandr Zinchenko | 2 |
Kieran Tierney | 3 |
Jakub Kiwior | 2 |
Mikel Merino | 3 |
Jorginho | 21 |
Ethan Nwaneri | 3 |
Raheem Sterling | 123 |
Total Premier League goals | 159 |
Liverpool bench vs Bournemouth | Premier League goals |
Caoimhin Kelleher | 0 |
Jarrell Quansah | 2 |
Kostas Tsimikas | 0 |
Conor Bradley | 1 |
Wataru Endo | 1 |
Harvey Elliott | 4 |
Curtis Jones | 10 |
Diogo Jota | 62 |
Darwin Nunez | 24 |
Total Premier League goals | 104 |
Of course, Raheem Sterling isn’t in great form right now, but he is still a weapon that Arsenal can call upon.
When everyone is fit, Arsenal do have plenty of attacking options, add Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus into the mix, and the north London club have plenty of players who can come on and score goals.
In fact, the numbers show that Arsenal’s substitutes have been way more effective than Liverpool’s this season in terms of scoring goals.
Substitutions made | Goals by substitutes | |
Arsenal | 87 | 7 |
Liverpool | 95 | 5 |
Arsenal may well fall short in the Premier League title race this season, but that may not be down to the fact that they don’t have goals to bring on off the bench.
