In an quite incredible turnaround, Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel is now on his way to join Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day.
Previously it was reported that the Bayern striker had rejected a move to N17, however, Tel is on a plane to London to become a Tottenham player for the next six months.
Arsenal were interested in Tel, but it now appears as if Spurs have stolen the march on their rivals in a pretty unprecedented u-turn.
Tel can operate as a central striker or on the left-wing, the kind of versatile profile that Ange Postecoglou has always enjoyed working with in attack.
Perhaps Tel will immediately be positioned as Spurs’ number nine whilst Dominic Solanke is out, a move that would come at the expense of Richarlison, who’s only just returned to the starting eleven himself.
Jamie O’Hara delighted with new Tottenham signing Mathys Tel
That being said, Jamie O’Hara has just delivered his verdict on Tel moving to Spurs whilst live on Sky Sports.
The news broke pretty much out of the blue and O’Hara was on hand to discuss Daniel Levy’s good work, labelling the signing of Tel as a ‘big coup’.
O’Hara said: “It’s nice to have some positivity around the place. We are always struggling at the minute and it could still be a good window. Do we get a couple of players in last minute?
“That could be a big coup. It’s a big signing. Are you going to spend money on him or getting him on loan? He is going to add quality to the team and he is going to come in and start. So Daniel Levy could still get it right, he has got time.
“You have seen managers and players come to the Premier League and struggle so it is a different beast. He is obviously a talented footballer.
“I think if we can get him on loan with an obligation to buy in the summer or Levy is a shrewd businessman, he will get the deal that works for Spurs, that’s for sure. And it looks like we can get it over the line, so happy days.”
Will Mathys Tel be eligible to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup?
Interestingly for Tottenham fans, Harry Kane has complimented Tel’s attitude in the past, a young forward who simply seems desperate to play.
It will be hard for Tel to replace Son Heung-min on the left, but when everyone is back fit, it certainly wouldn’t be impossible.
That being said, even though a deal isn’t over the line just yet, some fans in north London may already be wondering if Tel will be eligible for the club’s huge tie with Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Thursday.
Kevin Danso can feature in the semi-final and it currently appears as if Tel’s deal will be completed in time for his involvement too.
Two strong signings for Postecoglou, who has also just received a big boost in terms of the club’s ambitions to win the Europa League.
