Mathys Tel is the newest arrival at Tottenham Hotspur after his move to Spurs on deadline day.

Tel joined Spurs on loan with an option to buy towards the end of the transfer window.

Tel made a big U-turn on deadline day after initially rejecting Spurs, and Harry Kane played a part in convincing Tel to join Spurs.

However, it wasn’t just Kane that had a word with Tel about joining Tottenham.

Indeed, Ange Postecoglou spoke to Tel before his move to Spurs, and according to the player himself, Wilson Odobert spoke to him about joining Tottenham before he made the switch to Bayern Munich.

Mathys Tel is good friends with Wilson Odobert

Tel spoke about his conversation with Odobert, claiming that the pair are actually good friends.

Odobert and Tel have played together at youth level for France, and they had a conversation prior to this move with Wilson selling Spurs to his international teammate.

“Wilson Odobert, you have played with him, did you speak to Wilson?” Tel was asked.

“Yes, I talked with Wilson, he told me to come, he said you have to come here. He’s my friend. I played with him with the French team, we’re good friends and he told me to come, it’s a great team and you will see, it’s really nice,” Tel said.

Mathys Tel record alongside Wilson Odobert

Mathys Tel says he’s good friends with Wilson Odobert, and that bodes well for Spurs should they play in the same attack.

Odobert and Tel have actually played together on seven occasions in the past for France, and their record is quite remarkable.

Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert’s record together
Games 7
Wins 4
Draws 0
Losses 3
Mathys Tel goals 3
Wilson Odobert goals 1
Joint goal participation 2

Tel and Odobert work really well together, as the stats show.

The pair have two joint goal participations in seven matches, averaging one every 3.5 games.

In comparison, Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane have 54 joint goal participations in 297 games, which is one every 5.5 matches.

It’s a much smaller sample size at a smaller level, but the fact that Odobert and Tel’s stats together are better than Son and Kane’s is incredibly promising it has to be said.

Who knows? Perhaps Spurs have stumbled upon another iconic attacking partnership here.
