Tottenham Hotspur’s £70 million bid to sign Marc Guehi a day after they announced the signing of Kevin Danso on loan from RC Lens is perhaps the standout story to emerge on transfer deadline day.

But what is even more interesting is that Tottenham bid for Guehi before they signed Danso on loan.

Ange Postecoglou will be frustrated that Crystal Palace rejected Tottenham’s bid for Guehi — despite Spurs being willing to break the bank for a player who has less than 18 months left on his contract.

However, it comes as no surprise that Palace value Marc Guehi as highly as they do as he is not only their best centre-back but also their captain.

As Crystal Palace have endured a serious upturn in form, their talismanic centre-back has been vital to their revival.

Paul Merson tells Tottenham to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

From Tottenham’s perspective, they are certainly short at the back, with Radu Dragusin set to miss the rest of the season through injury and Cristian Romero still healing from his ankle injury.

But Guehi has decided to stay at Crystal Palace, which is a massive blow for Spurs.

But Arsenal legend Paul Merson has urged Tottenham to sign Guehi by any means possible, saying live on Sky Sports News: “I think Tottenham should get him, I do. I think Tottenham should go for him. I think Chelsea have a thing where they can offer a defender for Guehi. I would be careful if I was Palace with Guehi, he has 18 months on his contract. At the end of the season he has one year left and I don’t see him signing there.

“Palace are saying if now, I understand when they didn’t sell him to Newcastle last season, it was touch and go and you felt Palace might be in a relegation battle. But now they are safe and I think now they might be prepared to take the money.”

“I think if it doesn’t happen now he might stick his heels in and say I will wait another year and sign for someone and get fortunes. He is at that age where you wouldn’t deprive him of that, he has done his apprenticeship and he will get one more big move. I think, for me, he would be a very good signing whether that be back to Chelsea or to Tottenham. Whoever gets him, [Guehi] would be an outstanding player.”

The worry for Tottenham is Chelsea could make a move for Guehi this summer and due to his time at Cobham, it would be no surprise if he fancies a return to Stamford Bridge. Guehi does rate Tottenham as a team but even so, the Blues are in a much better position to challenge for trophies than the Lilywhites.

Marc Guehi is eyeing summer Liverpool move

Guehi is reportedly eyeing a move to Liverpool and is willing to wait for them until the summer before potentially heading to Anfield.

Liverpool are ready to negotiate over signing Guehi as well.

Tottenham will be hoping that heartache is not written in their destiny in the summer if they do try and sign the Englishman as it is difficult to expect him to turn down a move to Arne Slot’s side in favour of joining Spurs.
