Tim Sherwood says Arsenal should sign £40m Premier League striker ahead of Ollie Watkins in ‘no brainer’ deal

Arsenal are in the market for a striker ahead of the 11pm transfer deadline.

No new names have emerged today, after Arsenal saw a bid for Ollie Watkins rejected earlier in the week.

Arsenal are unlikely to sign Mathys Tel as things stand too – so it is entirely possible that Mikel Arteta does not welcome a striker to the Emirates Stadium with his side currently six points behind Liverpool in the Premier League.

Of course, there is still plenty of time for the situation to change – as we saw in the summer when Raheem Sterling joined on loan from Chelsea at the last hour.

In the meantime, Tim Sherwood has told Arsenal who they should be trying to sign before the transfer window slams shut – Liam Delap.

Tim Sherwood urges Arsenal to sign Liam Delap

Speaking on Sky Sports alongside Paul Merson, the 55-year-old seemed baffled by the fact Arsenal are not currently trying to sign the Ipswich Town No.19 before the 11pm deadline.

Sherwood said: “No brainer for me. Delap in front of Watkins – for what they need at the moment – and ahead of Sesko. Right now.I know Ipswich without Delap are pretty much consigned to the Championship next year, but I think £40m would get him now and someone who would get (good) development on Mikel Arteta.

“He gives them something different. He is a box player. He is strong, he holds the ball up, he brings others into play. I think he is an absolute no brainer, someone who knows the league. They get relegated and I still think his value would be up there. £40m is nothing for Arsenal and you’re talking about a boy who is 20 years old, he has his future ahead of him.”

Delap has enjoyed a fantastic debut campaign in the Premier League so far this season, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in 23 appearances – an impressive return for a side sitting 19th in the table.

Liam Delap could be keen on leaving Ipswich Town for Arsenal

Ben Jacobs recently shared some information on the 21-year-old.

It was said that Delap wants a move to London – with Chelsea and Tottenham keen – so a bid from Arsenal could well tempt the England U21 international.

Jacobs said: “I think the player is quite keen on moving to a London club. I don’t think, because he’s playing at Ipswich at the moment, he minds about the now. So again, it’s about where’s the best development, where’s the best package, where’s the best training facilities, where’s the best manager.”

Pep Guardiola is also a fan of Delap – and Manchester City reportedly have a £30m buyback clause on their academy graduate – so Arteta could trump his close pal to the striker if an approach is made today.
