Tottenham Hotspur are set for an eventful transfer deadline day, with one signing all-but over the line and another big target in their sights.

Mathys Tel is on his way to Tottenham after making a U-turn, with TBR Football sources saying Spurs will pay £6.5million to bring Tel on loan until the summer.

Tottenham also landed Kevin Danso on loan from Lens at the weekend and have also tried their luck with a £70million bid for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Tim Sherwood has now spoken about Tottenham’s bid for Guehi and explained why he thinks Spurs should pay “over the odds” for him.

Tim Sherwood says Marc Guehi is ‘one of the best centre-backs’ Tottenham can get

Sherwood, speaking on Sky Sports News, said he feels Guehi is “one of the best centre-backs they can get” and deemed him “better than (Cristian) Romero”.

The former Tottenham boss said: “If you’re going to try and get Marc Guehi now, you are going to pay over the odds. I think he is worth paying over the odds.

“The two best centre-backs Tottenham have at the club are Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven.

“And unless you can go and get somebody better than them two there’s no point of bringing a body in for the sake of it because at the end of February they’re both gonna be fit and come back into the side.

“With Marc Guehi he is better than Romero in my opinion but he’s not better than Van de Ven, they are completely different but he will be one of the best centre-backs they can get.”

How likely Tottenham are to sign Guehi this year

Unfortunately for Tottenham, Crystal Palace rejected Spurs’ bid to sign Guehi for £70million this month.

Furthermore, sources have told TBR Football that Guehi is happy to stay at Crystal Palace until the end of the season.

Guehi considers Tottenham a quality side, praising them after Crystal Palace’s 1-0 win against Spurs earlier this season.

However, with Palace now on the up and pushing for a top-half finish, it seems unlikely that they’ll be willing to cash in on him mid-season.

That said, sources have told TBR Football that Guehi is expected to leave Crystal Palace this summer.

This could give Tottenham the chance to re-ignite their interest in bringing him over to N17 at the end of the season.
