Despite being on the periphery of things at Bayern Munich for the most part, Mathys Tel has made his way to Tottenham Hotspur on a loan deal with the lofty reputation of being an incredible young prospect.
After all, sources told TBR Football that Tel is considered a “generational talent” by Tottenham — despite just being a bit-part player at Bayern.
With Tottenham in desperate need of a spark, all eyes will be on Mathys Tel to see whether he can steer them away from further sinking this season and show the world why all he needed was a big break.

The pressure and expectation on the Frenchman might also be sky-high because it has seemingly taken Spurs to move mountains to secure his signature — making him the marquee signing of their winter transfer window.
Unless Ange Postecoglou convinced Tel to join Tottenham, the 19-year-old might have either signed for another club on loan or stayed at Bayern, having rejected a move to North London until very recently.
But as Kane persuaded Tel about heading to Tottenham as well, he made a surprise deadline day move to the Premier League.
Ange Postecoglou told Mathys Tel he loves his speed and versatility
L’Equipe have reported that after Johan Lange flew to Munich to sign Tel, Spurs’ technical director felt that his meeting and presentation failed to convince the former Rennes striker about moving to Tottenham.
Even Daniel Levy jetted to Bavaria to make his case but Tel informed Bayern about rejecting Tottenham as he did not wish to be forced out of the club while also standing his ground about easily being sold by Spurs’ pitch.
But the report states that as Ange Postecoglou spoke to the young forward on a phone call, the former Celtic boss revealed how he wishes to deploy him, how much he loves his speed and versatility while stating that the Sarcelles-born speedster would terrify Premier League defences with his sheer quality.
Unlike Johan Lange and Daniel Levy, who tried selling the Tottenham project to Tel, Postecoglou’s long conversation with him was solely geared towards matters on the pitch.
After the phone call on Sunday evening, Tel, who discussed Tottenham with Kane decided to make the move the following day.
Tottenham supporters will be ecstatic that Postecoglou has a comprehensive idea of how the French U-21 international fits into his team.
Ange Postecoglou wanted a versatile forward like Mathys Tel
Ange Postecoglou was eyeing a versatile forward and as a result, him telling a multi-functional attacker like the Spurs new-boy how much he loves this trait in particular comes as no surprise — playing 33 games as a striker, 34 at left-wing and 14 on the right flank over the course of his career.
POSITION | APPEARANCES |
STRIKER | 33 |
LEFT-WINGER | 34 |
RIGHT-WINGER | 14 |
After signing for Tottenham on loan, Tel revealed he is good friends with Wilson Odobert, who told him to sign for his side on loan as well.
“Yes, I talked with Wilson, he told me to come, he said you have to come here.”
“He’s my friend. I played with him with the French team, we’re good friends and he told me to come, it’s a great team and you will see, it’s really nice.”
With the highly-rated speedster finally joining Tottenham, he can at the very least be assured that several figures at the club adore him as a player.
Kane expects Tel to blossom at Tottenham and Spurs fans would have been delighted to have heard how confident their former captain was in his prediction.
