What Chelsea sources are saying about potentially hijacking Tottenham’s Mathys Tel deal

If there’s any team that could cause a bit of late drama on transfer deadline day, it’s Chelsea.

Indeed, the Blues always love to get involved in something on deadline day, and, in recent years, Chelsea have been the kings of hijacking deals.

Chelsea pinched Mykhaylo Mudryk two years ago when it looked like Mudryk was set to join Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Chelsea signed Moises Caicedo 18 months ago after Liverpool bid £111m to sign the Ecuadorian midfielder.

Chelsea could have another trick up their sleeve on deadline day, but it does look like Spurs fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the west London club seemingly don’t have any intention of hijacking Spurs’ move for Mathys Tel.

Chelsea not planning Mathys Tel move

Speaking on Sky Sports News (3/2/25 4:10PM), Kaveh Solhekol has shared an update from inside Stamford Bridge about Chelsea and Mathys Tel.

Chelsea were linked with Tel earlier this month, and with the striker seemingly set for Tottenham, Solhekol asked his Chelsea sources if there was any chance of another late hijack.

However, according to the journalist, the Blues have absolutely no interest in getting involved on this front.

“I’ve also been asking people here about Mathys Tel. Of course, he’s on his way to Spurs, but the first we heard of Tel in this window was when Chelsea were interested in signing the player.

“I’m being told today that Chelsea have absolutely no interest in Mathys Tel today, they have absolutely no interest in him.”

Chelsea past Tottenham hijacks

Chelsea aren’t in for Tel on deadline day, but it’s easy to see why Solhekol wanted to ask the question here.

Indeed, Chelsea have a history of pinching players from Tottenham right at the last minute.

Signings Chelsea hijacked from Tottenham Year
Eden Hazard 2012
Willian 2013
Malo Gusto 2023

Of course, the most high-profile incident here was when Willian ditched a Spurs medical to join Chelsea way back in 2013.

Meanwhile, Eden Hazard looked set for Spurs at one point but he joined Chelsea instead.

Tottenham also wanted Malo Gusto before he agreed a move to Chelsea as well.

Chelsea do have a history of stealing players from under Tottenham’s noses, but, on this occasion, luckily, it does look like Spurs have a free run at signing Tel.
