Tottenham managed to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day – a real coup for Spurs.

The north Londoners surprisingly managed to shake hands with both the France U21 international and Bayern Munich on a loan deal lasting until the summer – despite the fact the man from Sarcelles initially rejected Tottenham.

Tottenham have paid £6.5m to loan Tel – and have a £45m option to buy the Frenchman on a permanent deal this summer.

In the meantime, Ange Postecoglou will hope the 19-year-old can help Tottenham rise away from 14th in the Premier League, and also aid progression in the cup competitions.

However, some have wondered whether Mathys Tel can actually play in the UEFA Europa League after appearing for Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League this season – but there is no need to worry.

Mathys Tel can play in the UEFA Europa League for Tottenham

Had Spurs signed the teenager at the start of January, he would not have been able to play in the final two league phase games Tottenham had against TSG Hoffenheim and Elfsborg.

However, the knockout phase represents a new period of UEFA Competitions, where those involved are permitted to register three new players.

UEFA regulation 32.01 states: “After the completion of the league phase and before the start of the knockout phase, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registrations must be completed by 6 February 2025 (24:00 CET) at the latest.”

Therefore, Tel’s three appearances for Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League earlier this season will not affect his European participation for Tottenham.

How Mathys Tel has fared in UEFA competitions

The new Tottenham No.11 has never actually played in the UEFA Europa League before – but he has appeared in the UEFA Conference League as well as the UEFA Champions League.

For Rennes, Tel – who spoke to Postecoglou before changing his mind – only made two UEFA Conference League appearances before sealing his £25m move to Bayern Munich at the age of 17.

However, the Frenchman has impressed in the UEFA Champions League on several occasions, scoring two goals and providing one assist in 16 appearances, including a memorable game where he tormented Manchester United, scoring a 92nd minute winner to secure a 4-3 victory.

Postecoglou will hope to see more of the same from Tel in the UEFA Europa League.
